The Connect Chamber Music Festival is a week long music event in Manchester that will run from June 12th to 17th. It is run by students from the Royal Northern College of Music who wanted a chance to share the music they love with the community, whilst raising money for important local charities and organisations. We have chosen a variety of amazing venues around Manchester to provide you with an exciting assortment of events throughout the week.

What is chamber music?

Chamber music is music composed for small groups of musicians that traditionally could fit into a room (chamber) to perform. The chamber groups in Connect Festival are all students at RNCM who love making music together and represent those who are pursuing a career in the industry as well as those will go into different areas of the music profession.

WHERE THE MONEY IS GOING

Being a student-run festival, we wanted to take this opportunity to make as much of a positive impact in the Manchester Community as possible. Everyone involved is rehearsing and performing for free with an aim to showcase the music that we love. We have also managed to secure most of our venues for zero cost, which we are extremely thankful for.

Below you can find more information on the local charities and projects we have chosen to donate all the proceeds of the festival to as well as links to the Crowdfunder and Justgiving pages.

LIFESHARE

"Lifeshare is a voluntary organisation established to help meet the needs of homeless and vulnerable people in Manchester and Salford. The first point of contact is with people on the streets, offering practical assistance, support and information. From this point we offer continued assistance that enables people to secure suitable accommodation, support them in maintaining their tenancies, and help them to access initiatives that carry their lives forward."

JYSEP

"The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program aims to support young people to develop their potential both through strengthening their moral identity and developing their intellectual and creative faculties.

Volunteering in community projects and performing acts of kindness can have a positive impact on mental wellbeing. There is evidence to suggest that getting involved in environmental activities and projects may also have a positive impact on physical health. Community engagement can foster a greater sense of ownership and identification with the local area, which may lead to long-term sustainability. It can also combat social exclusion and empower individuals."

MANCHESTER UKRAINE WELCOME FUND

"We're all shocked by events unfolding in Ukraine. Many Mancunians have even offered places in their homes to welcome evacuees here. But thousands of us also want to do something to show Manchester stands with Ukraine.

Our Manchester Ukraine Welcome Fund gives you a chance to show YOUR support. By donating here, you can be sure that your gift is going directly to help Ukrainians arriving in our city.

We Love MCR Charity is partnering with Manchester City Council, which has unrivaled connections across the city. All your generous gifts will be shared with charities and community groups with huge experience of supporting refugees and Ukrainian communities on the ground in Manchester. There will be no delays in setting up new organisations. These groups include Europia and Caritas Diocese of Salford, with further Partners being recruited now. They're using their wealth of experience to support Ukrainians being welcomed into Mancunians' homes."

NIAMOS RADICAL ARTS & CENTRE

"The Nia theatre was built in 1902 and was originally named the Hippodrome.  This name was later assigned to the adjacent theatre and our building became known as the Playhouse. Over the 20th century it housed a theatre, a cinema, the BBC Radio recording centre and is probably best known for its radical and pioneering success as Europe's largest black led, black cultural centre: the Nia Centre.

It was re-opened in 2017 by a group of locals and creatives with a vision of providing a creative platform to showcase Hulme and Moss Side's vibrant and diverse communities. Now it is home to a variety of community focused projects, a cafe, support groups and workshops for all ages.

We are still in our early stages and are looking after an old theatre that needs a lot of maintenance. Donations are most welcome to keep the project alive and continue developing our building for all its users."
